Also known as Amy Foster, this is a wildly misjudged adaptation of a haunting Joseph Conrad short story. Director Beeban Kidron (Bridget Jones: the Edge of Reason) goes for the overblown romantic (and very heavy-handed) touch in this melodramatic tale of a silent woman (Rachel Weisz) who falls in love with the sole survivor of a shipwreck (Vincent Perez). However, no amount of craggy scenery, violent storms and mournful looks from the duo can disguise the fact that Kidron has delivered a plodding tragedy that fails to move, and even raises a snigger in a clichéd rock pool love scene which even Barbara Cartland would have been embarrassed to describe.

The film tells the story of Russian emigree and the only survivor from ship crash Yanko Goorall and servant Amy Foster in the end of 19th century. When Yanko enters a farm sick and hungry after the shipwreck, everyone is afraid of him, except for Amy, who is very kind and helps him. Soon he becomes like a son for Dr. James Kennedy and romance between Yanko and Amy follows.
