The iconic TV series was hardly great art, but at least it had a down-to-earth, easygoing charm that's absent in director Jay Chandrasekhar's lame-brained, big-screen retread. In between relentless car chases, smash-ups, explosions and smutty vulgarity, it's actually Burt Reynolds who carries what passes for the plot. He plays nefarious town commissioner Boss Hogg, who uses a celebrity auto race as a decoy for his plan to strip-mine Hazzard County and steal the farm where Uncle Jesse (Willie Nelson) and good ole boys Luke (Johnny Knoxville) and Bo (Seann William Scott) run their moonshine business. Meanwhile, in a thankless screen debut that does nobody any favours, Jessica Simpson pouts woodenly as their scantily clad cousin, Daisy. It may have high profile stars and a large budget, but this outdated hillbilly dud couldn't be more lowbrow and moronic. |
