Tying the knot proves a messy business in this romantic comedy, but it's British director Clare Kilner who winds up in a tangle. Will & Grace star Debra Messing is left to coast on charm alone as lonely New York-based singleton Kat, who employs professional escort Nick (Dermot Mulroney) to hang off her arm at her half-sister's posh English wedding. Matters are complicated by the fact that her former fiancé (Jeremy Sheffield) is the best man. Mulroney is suitably suave as the hunk-for-hire, but both leads struggle with the thin, unsurprising script. Movies such as this, in which everyone is well groomed and impecabbly dressed, are not meant to resemble anything like real life, but Kilner's refusal to address the matter of Nick's unsavoury occupation still niggles. Sarah Parish delivers a few good punchlines as Kat's bawdy, blunt cousin, but otherwise this staggers clumsily to the altar like the best man after a stag night. |
