Martin Scorsese's mammoth documentary follows the two-night residency of the Rolling Stones at New York's Beacon Theatre during the 2006 A Bigger Bang tour. Multiple cameras capture the band's raw, elemental energy on-stage, and Scorsese utilises several camera operators (such as Albert Maysles, director of Gimme Shelter) under the aegis of cinematographer Robert Richardson. Special guests Jack White, Christina Aguilera and Buddy Guy help the Stones belt out an eclectic set, while frustratingly fleeting interludes show Scorsese coping with the logistical nightmare of a vast touring machine and handpicked archive footage illustrates the group's 46-year history (including a young Jagger discussing his drug arrest on World in Action). Arguably, the director has made films that better testify to the band's sonic power - the use of Jumping Jack Flash in Mean Streets, for example - and Shine a Light doesn't match the insight of Scorsese's Bob Dylan documentary No Direction Home. That's likely to mean only hardcore Stones fans will find any lasting Satisfaction here.
