Overview:
Penny Woolcock's Leeds-set comedy drama offers a wonderfully vibrant and inclusive take on contemporary Britain. Shot in Beeston and largely cast with non-professional actors, it feels refreshingly authentic. Kelli Hollis (star of Woolcock's made-for-TV Tina Goes Shopping and Tina Takes a Break) again plays single mum Tina, who lives in an area divided between whites and Asians. As the traditional early November celebration of Mischief Night approaches, tensions are simmering, and Tina and old flame Immie Khan (Ramon Tikaram) are caught on the racial fault line. Woolcock's not afraid of tackling taboos, from radical Islam to heroin addiction, and pulls off the quite remarkable feat of making no problem seem impossible of being salved - if not solved - by the power of laughter.
