The casting of Sally Field as a gun-toting vigilante and Kiefer Sutherland as an out-and-out baddie gives novelty value to this revenge thriller from director John Schlesinger. Field plays an ordinary woman who is catapulted into a world of terror when her daughter is raped and murdered. Forensic evidence points to Sutherland, but when he escapes jail on a legal technicality Field sets out to exact her own form of justice. Field is perhaps a touch too mumsy to convince totally in her role, though Sutherland clearly relishes the opportunity to play a lowlife killer. Not one of Schlesinger's best, but an interesting and entertaining departure for the Oscar-winning director of Midnight Cowboy.
