Overview:
The cost of commitment is a pricey air fare in this undemanding romantic comedy about two lovers from opposite sides of the States who battle to keep the flame alive after a whirlwind romance in New York. Erin (Drew Barrymore) has been gaining work experience in the city, while Garrett (Justin Long) is firmly ensconced in a music-business career. Because they're both guarded about their feelings, the separation when Erin returns to college in San Francisco becomes a test of endurance. It's well-observed in the way the couple tread around each other's sensibilities - even at a distance - but the gags can feel tacked-on. Comedy is mostly derived from the crude banter between Garrett and his friends and the neuroses of Erin's married older sister (Christina Applegate). Clichés aside, this has a fresh, contemporary feel, and the cosy rapport between Barrymore and Long (on/off partners in real-life) makes it an easy ride.
