Overview:
In this sci-fi adventure, a small island in the Gulf of Mexico inexplicably explodes, releasing a tide of mutating plankton that starts killing off the marine life. With the world under threat, a team of marine experts is called in to try to avert a disaster. There's an impressive array of diving gadgetry on display, including the world's most sophisticated submersible, and female lead Mehgan Heaney-Grier is suitably qualified - she held the US record for the depth of a dive achieved on a single gulp of air (165ft, if you're interested) when the film was made. Sadly, the impressive statistics can't disguise the fact that Philip Sgriccia's film isn't particularly absorbing, and the attempts to spice it up with mysterious undersea cave paintings and ancient prophecies dull any sci-fi edge with fantasy.
